Three students from the Don Bosco Technological Institute (DBTI) have successfully completed their on-the-job training with the Remington Group of Companies. The students; Carol Sine, Josephine Dunlee and Lynnette Kawi started their on-the-job training on the 26th of May 2021 and completed their prerequisite 360 hours of industry training as part of their In-Plant Training (IPT) program.
The IPT is an immersion program that is a part of the DBTI curriculum where the students are allowed to have a hands-on experience in the working environment. This is a vital program as students are provided with a platform to apply the skills, knowledge and attitude they are taught in the classroom setting. The IPT program aims to help students adjust to the working environment by enhancing their knowledge and skills acquired in school to become more responsive to the demands of the industries such as; develop the value of professionalism, commitment to work and experience the actual world of work.
The trio spent 9 weeks working closely with our team of professionals. They each had 2 and a half weeks of rotation between them in our IT and Technical Service Departments in two of our Business Units; Remington Technology and FX Business Centre.
Trainees Feedback.
“From this experience, I have learnt new skills from the IT and Service departments. During my time with the IT department, I came across software’s that I didn’t learn about in school or my previous In-Plant Training Program and that has broadened my IT perspective. Whilst with the Service department, I learnt how to replace and install printer consumables, get readings off printers and respond to error codes. Learning also how to communicate and approach customers in a professional manner” – Carol Sine.
“The In-Plant Training program with the Remington Group has introduced me to aspects of IT that I want to further develop. On my rotation with the IT department, I have learnt about managing a network system which has broadened my knowledge of IT hardware and software infrastructures. While on my rotation with the Service Department, I have learnt how to perform general servicing of Konica Minolta and Fuji machines. This experience has been enriching”- Lynnette Kawi.
“My IPT experience with Remington has been enjoyable. I learnt a lot from the two departments that I’ve been placed on rotation with. From the IT department, some new skills that I learnt include; Installing CCTV and Trackpro, configuring Cisco phones and connecting remotely. While being in the Service Department, I learnt how to troubleshoot multifunctional devices. My supervisors were easy to get along with and assisted and mentored me well”- Josephine Dunlee.
The Remington Group has been excited to partner with DBTI to provide an avenue to help the next generation of Papua New Guineans as we are focused on providing opportunities for young Papua New Guineans and developing our national workforce. We hope that Carol, Josephine and Lynnette have gained the necessary skills and knowledge with their time with us and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. We also look forward to investing in more young Papua New Guineans.
